Does alcohol REALLY help you sleep?

After a LONG and STRESSFUL day, it can be tempting to reach for that glass of wine, perfect craft beer or whiskey on the rocks. I get it. It feels like it helps us relax, unwind from the day and prepare for bed.

But did you know alcohol actually does the complete opposite? By reaching for alcohol, we’re actually choosing WORSE sleep and INCREASED anxiety. Most people associate this with heavy drinking, but actually you can feel these effects after only 2-3 drinks (bet that’s your average after a stressful day!)

Don’t believe me? Check your wearable that tracks your HRV after having a few drinks in the evening. You’ll notice lower HRV, less deep sleep, and worse recovery following days that you have alcohol.

So what can you do instead?

Swap the ritual -

Choose to have a mocktail in a fancy glass so it still feels, and looks, like a treat without the negative consequences. Bonus points if you include electrolytes!

Choose a non-alcoholic alternative like an Athletic Brewing Beer or Hop Water

Choose an herbal tea instead. If you want something that’s actually designed to help you wind down, chamomile tea should do the trick!

Swap the habit -

Get some activity in. Go for a family walk after dinner. The low-impact activity will help with digestion. Bonus if you get to also watch the sunset to help reset circadian rhythm to help  your body naturally wind down
